Sports Memories: Basketball team takes 1st trip to state since 1936

  • At the Albert Lea boys’ hockey banquet, Garrett Matz was named Most Valuable Player; Bergan Lundak and Austin Dulitz, Most Improved Player; and Lucas Hacker, Hardest Worker.
  • Former Albert Lea High School swimmer Karli Kriewall, a sophomore diver at Boise State University earned Mountain West All-Conference honors in one-meter diving and platform diving.
  • Matt Dumba scored 22-seconds into overtime to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators.

20 years

  • Jamie Broback scored 17 points and Janel McCarville added 12 to lead the University of Minnesota Women’s Basketball Team to a 64-33 win over St. Francis in the first round of the NCAA Basketball tournament.
  • The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team’s first trip to the state tournament since 1936 ended in the opening round when they were defeated by Shakopee 42-39 at Target Center. Corey Dieser and Parker Skophammer led the Tigers with 10 points.
  • At the Albert Lea girls’ hockey banquet Tessa Christensen was named Most Valuable Player; Katie Nelson, Most Improved; Sarah Jensen, Sportsmanship Award; and Jenna Christensen, Miss Hustle.

50 years

  • The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team defeated Austin 41-31 in the semifinals of the Region A Class AA basketball tournament played in front of 3487 fans at the Mayo Civic Center. Rich Wendorff led the Tigers with 15 points with Scott Johnson adding nine. The Tigers were set to play Mankato West in the finals.
  • Western Auto Store in Albert Lea was advertising the Revelation football for $3.69 and the Zebco “Zee Bee” fishing reel for $2.77.
  • Ellendale’s Steve Vanden Heuvel and Larry Pezl, New Richland’s Dave Tappe and Jeff Thompson and Glenville’s Dwight Greibrok were named to the Gopher Conference Boys’ Basketball All-Conference Team.
  • The Endres Rangers lost their opening round game of the state Senior B Men’s Hockey Tournament 5-1 to defending champion St. Paul Hamline Legion.
  • The Minnesota Gophers hockey team defeated Harvard 6-4 to advance to the NCAA Division I hockey championship, where they were to face off with Michigan Tech. Junior winger Warren Miller’s three goal outburst to start the third period was part of a five goal third period for the Gophers.
  • Gary Buchanan, Ken Cafourek and Bob Knutson provided a balanced scoring attack as the Green Briars defeated the X-Raiders 59-43 in Glenville City League basketball play. Vince Hajek led the Raiders with 22 points.
  • Minneapolis Tribune outdoor editor Ron Schara was set to be the guest speaker at the annual Ducks Unlimited Banquet in Albert Lea.
  • Norm Gratton’s second goal of the night led the Minnesota North Stars to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Met Center.
  • Neal Skaar won the open division of the State AAU Freestyle Wrestling Tournament at the 180.5 weight class.
  • Rookie Lyman Bostock had three hits to help the Minnesota Twins snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox in exhibition baseball play.
