- An estimated crowd of 2,500 fans packed the Grandstand at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds for the third annual Crossroads of Destruction demolition derby put on by Paul Nielsen and the Masters of Disaster.
- In a second game of a doubleheader with Northfield, the Albert Lea softball team defeated Northfield 9-4. Hannah Schilling pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits to pick up the victory.
- Chris Enderson threw a complete game, allowing only four hits as the Albert Lea baseball team defeated St. Peter 7-4. Wyatt Paulsen had two RBIs for the Tigers.
20 years
- The Glenville-Emmons baseball team defeated Houston 17-2 in Glenville. Dustin Rayman led the Wolverines 17-hit attack by going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.
- The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team picked up a 4-3 win over Rochester John Marshall. Connor Keyeski and Jon Hatcher picked up wins in singles with the doubles teams of Andrew Dyrdal and Corey Dieser and Andrew Haatvedt and Josh Svendsen also getting victories.
- The Albert Lea girls’ golf team placed second at a triangular at North Links Golf Club in Mankato. Kelli Hanson shot an 88 and Kaeli Wayne a 99 to pace the Tigers.
50 years
- John Dziura threw a four-hitter and Paul Sherman added two hits and two RBIs as the Albert Lea Tigers baseball team defeated Rochester Mayo 4-2 at Hayek Field.
- Joe Lair pitched a complete game while striking out 10 as Emmons defeated Delevan 5-1 in Border League baseball action. With the win, the Eagles were 3-0 on the season.
- Herb Washington, who was a member of the Oakland A’ as a designated runner, was placed on waivers by team owner Charley Finley.
- Mike Edling and Bruce Leland each shot a 78, but their effort fell short as the Albert Lea Tigers golf team fell 313-319 to Owatonna.
- The Albert Lea girls’ track team fell 91-23 to Owatonna. Marilyn Claassen took second place in the discus and shot put for the Tigerettes.
- Tony Richie pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits as the Albert Lea b-squad baseball team defeated Austin 4-3. He also knocked in three runs with a single and a double.
- Minnesota Gov. Wendell Anderson teamed up with tennis hustler Bobby Riggs to defeat two women 3-2 in an intermission match at the Grand Masters Tennis Tournament held in Bloomington.
- Albert Lea’s Scott Farnes was one of 36 players selected to play for the South team at the Shrine Bowl All-Star High School Football Game that was being held at Memorial Stadium.
- Dale Koestler picked up the win as Kiester handed Freeborn their first loss of the year as they defeated the Yeomen 3-2 in eight innings. Gary Tukua took the loss for Freeborn.
Alumni updates
There will be three familiar faces wearing Wells Wildcats baseball uniforms this summer as they begin townball play on Sunday with a 5 p.m. game at Cleveland. Former Tigers Jacob Skinness, a 2023 graduate, and Jack Skinness and Spencer Jones, both 2024 graduates, will be back for a second year of play. The Wildcats have their home opener at Thompson Park in Wells at 7:30 p.m. May 28 against Blue Earth.
Duane Arens, a 1979 graduate of Albert Lea High School, was recently inducted into the Minnesota State-Mankato Rugby Hall of Fame at an event at the Kato Ballroom. He is the 22nd member to be inducted in the 55-year history of the team. He is also a member of the Metropolis Rugby Hall of Fame based in Minneapolis.
