- Emil Malakowsky rolled a 700 series in the Thursday Seniors League at the Holiday Lanes.
- Former Albert Lea wrestler Nate Skaar was named Rookie Coach of the Year for the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse wrestling team after his team finished fourth in the Division III National Tournament held at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
- The headline in the Albert Lea Tribune read, “The Drought Stops Here” as the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team advanced to the Minnesota State Boys’ Basketball tournament with a 51-44 win over Faribault at the Mayo Civic Center. The win gave the Tigers their first trip to state since 1936. Michael Behrends led the Tigers with 17 points and Parker Skophammer added 14.
- Glenville High School was hosting the Dairyland Donkey Basketball show at the school gym. Competing were teams from the Glenville-Emmons and Albert Lea FFA chapters, the Myrtle Fire Department and the Glenville FFA Alumni.
- The Albert Lea Figure Skating Team was presenting their 44th annual show titled “Dancing Blades” at the City Arena. The show featured Upper Great Lakes Regional Silver Medalist Lisa Anderson from Maple Grove.

- After only winning 17 games during the regular season, indications were the Minnesota North Stars had lost $700,000 in the previous 20 months.
- Tracy White scored four goals to lead Porter Beverage to a 5-2 win over Kogel Transfer in Elementary Girls Park League hockey action.
- Ross Dahl, Jon Breuer, Mark Knutson and Vinny Cerrato were named to the Big Nine All-Conference hockey team.
- Pierce Trucking saw their record go to 10-0 on the season when they defeated Name of the Game 106-61 in YM-YWCA “A” league basketball play. Bill Laumann led the scoring attack with 22 points. Brothers Gabby and Neil Pierce added 26 and 22.
- The Austin Mavericks were closing out the home portion of their first Midwest Junior A Hockey League season with a game at Riverside Arena against the Fargo-Morehead Sugar Kings.
- The Minnesota Twins defeated Rollins College of Winter Park Florida 10-2 in an exhibition game played in Orlando. Dave McKay led the Twins with a bases loaded triple in the sixth inning.
- Minnesota North Star Bill Goldsworthy was set to be the featured speaker at the Albert Lea High School hockey banquet, replacing Lou Nanne who was originally scheduled to speak.
- Gary Engelby rolled a 562 series to take first place for the week in the Leftovers Bowling League.
- In the opening round of Region 1AA boys’ basketball play, Albert Lea defeated Faribault 51-41 at the Mayo Civic Center. Bob McCamy led the Tigers with 12 points and 10 rebounds. With the win, the Tigers were advancing to play Austin.
- Tim Tatatek took first place at 154 pounds and Tom Ehrhardt took first place at 132 pounds to lead a group of Albert Lea wrestlers who were competing at the Southern AAU Wrestling Tournament held in Tracy.
- Karen Blumer was the highest finisher for the Albert Lea girls’ gymnastic team at the region tournament in Rochester when she captured fifth place on the balance beam with a score of 6.0.
