- The Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team picked up their fourth straight win to start the season with a 70-52 win over Minnesota Academy for the Deaf. Eli Hallman led the Knights with 30 points with Dylan Lien adding 14 points and six rebounds.
- In the first round of the New Prague Trojans Holiday Girls’ Hockey Tournament, the host team defeated Albert Lea 6-1. Hannah Savelkoul scored the only goal for the Tigers.
- Darcy Kuemper stopped 41 of the 45 shots he faced as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Dallas Stars 5-4. Marco Scandella scored at the 2:04 mark in overtime to give the Wild the win.
20 years
- The 200-yard medley relay team of Kaeli Wayne, Leah Matheson, Samantha Cole and Krista Horejsi placed 16th at the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Meet held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
- In the final dual meet of the season opening Albert Lea Invitational, the Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team stunned second-ranked Simley 32-29. Trailing 24-23 after 171 pounds, Alex Paul and Ben Berhow picked up wins to give the Tigers the victory.
- The Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball team defeated Houston 91-32. Michael Greibrok led the Wolverines with 20 points with Tyler Ziebell adding 15.
50 years
- The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team opened their season with a 36-17 win over Minneapolis Edison. Jeff Larson, Dwight Gingerich, Jeff Paulson, Mike Schmitz, Larry Kihlstadius, Steve Egland, Bob Jean and Byron Ayres picked up wins for the Tigers.
- The Albert Lea b-squad hockey team opened their season with a 3-2 loss to Austin. Jeff White and Eric Sorenson scored goals for the Bengals.
- In the Border League basketball opener for both teams, Freeborn defeated Glenville 51-50. Kevin McKean led the Yeoman with 15 points. Dwight Greibrok had 12 points and Jeff Rayman 10 to lead the Trojans.
- About half of Rochester John Marshall’s 1,700 students faced unexcused absences for walking out of school because they were not given a holiday in recognition of their football team winning the Minnesota Class AA championship.
- Albert Lea’s Scott Farnes was named to the All-State Football Team by the Minneapolis Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press.
- Scott Johnson scored 16 points and Jeff Curry added 15 as the Albert Lea b-squad boys’ basketball team defeated Rochester John Marshall 52-50.
- Leukemia-stricken shortstop Danny Thompson of the Minnesota Twins was the recipient of the Hutch Award, which was named after former major league pitcher and manager Fred Hutchinson, who had died of cancer in 1964.
- Rich Wendorff scored 28 points and Dave Berg and Jeff Curry added 12 as the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team opened their season with an 80-54 win over Mankato East.
- The New Richland-Hartland boys’ basketball team opened their season with a 75-63 win over Alden-Conger. Dave Tappe led the Cardinals with 26 points. Ron Monson scored 17 to lead the Blackhawks.
Alumni update
Campbell Cichosz, a 2020 graduate of Albert Lea High School, is a junior defenseman on the Minnesota State-Mankato men’s hockey team, where he has appeared in 12 games and registered two assists.
